salt-fired stoneware

Salt firing is a process where sodium chloride is introduced into the kiln near the end of the firing cycle at peak temperature. The salt vaporizes in the kiln, and bonds with silica molecules in the pots to form a glaze. Salt firing originated in Germany and was used in early american pottery. Sodium bicarbonate can be used instead of salt using a similar technique called soda firing.
